Labeling of canned food with hotmelt adhesives is safe and effective

At Productos Colcar we know that food labeling is the only way for consumers to know what they are really buying. However, sometimes it is not possible because the adhesion between the label and the product is so weak that it comes off causing its loss. To avoid this, we have developed a wide range of hotmelt adhesives designed for glass and plastic canned food. We tell you its properties and applications in this post.

Food labeling is the only way for consumers to know what they are really buying. An impossible action when labels come off the product before we can review them.

This would not happen if the adhesion between the label and the product is strong, as reflected in the good results that hotmelt adhesives provide to the food sector, specifically in plastic containers, but also to the canning sector.

Canned food, some curiosity

Canned food is a way to preserve the properties of agri-food products for a long period of time.

Some time ago they enjoyed a bad press, but today, they are not only a useful option, but they have also become highly valued components, both in the domestic sphere and in restaurants.

On the shelves we can find canned vegetables, pickles, fruits, sauces … Also fish and seafood, without forgetting, of course, meat or precooked foods.

Its origins date back to the 19th century and the promoter of this invention – one of the most decisive in the history of mankind – was the French general Napoleon Bonaparte.

First preserves were packed in glass jars, the tinplate container – the most universal – was a later invention that the Englishman Peter Durand patented in 1810. It was a container that protected food from deterioration caused by light.

In our country, industrial production of cans took a great leap thanks to José Colin, who in 1820 set up a factory in Pontevedra municipality of Nantes, where he produced and packaged fried oil sardines.

Labels and back labels

Cylindrical, conical, rectangular … containers that house preserves are very varied, as well as the labels and back labels that contain relevant information. Information that we must know and that, in some cases, we ignore because during the course of the shelf home, the labels peel off and, therefore, are lost.

Solution to this problem is easy if suitable glues are applied to ensure effective adhesion.

In the case of canned in glass, it is common to use glue labels. For canned food, the industry uses adhesives, since they offer better benefits.
For all of them, Productos Colcar custom designs a generous range of glues that guarantee efficient gluing of paper or plastic labels on glass or metal containers.

Whether for glass or can containers, our hotmelt glues ensure efficient gluing of paper or plastic labels

Absolute compatibility with every machine

Complexity of today’s industrial processes requires the use of glues and adhesives perfectly adapted to each machine, process and material. Aware of this, Productos Colcar has a wide range of hot melt adhesives to ensure that the label adhesion to the product is successful.

Our hot melt adhesives are compatible with machines of different speeds

With this in mind, we adapt our solutions to both the application system and the speed of label placement.

In this table we show our assortment of glues and the benefits of each one:

Hotmelt adhesives, highly demanded at canning sector

We will not tire of remembering that hotmelt adhesives are in high demand among the industrial sectors that are dedicated to the labeling of glass and metal containers. Its properties guarantee compatibility with all machines, application methods and production processes, because…

  • They are very flexible in a wide range of temperatures.
  • They are very flexible in a wide range of temperatures.
  • They have a high initial adhesion.
  • They are applied at low temperatures (they resist up to 40 ºC below zero).
  • They are highly resistant to moisture, so the label keeps its good appearance for the life of the product.
  • They have low viscosity.
  • They do not provide odours.
  • They give off low emissions.
